“Overcoming limitations of traditional surgery technologies”

It is a robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery program, a less invasive technique compared to open surgical approach, as needed incisions are much smaller than traditional surgery.

Da Vinci Robotic Systems have a history of more than twenty years, and present in the most reputable hospitals in the world, providing patients and their relatives with the best technology. Its application may apply for a wide range of minimally invasive surgical procedures, even on high complexity patients.

  • Frequently asked questions

It is currently the most evolved platform intended for minimally invasive surgery, developed by Intuitive Surgical, and available for you at The Panama Clinic.

Da Vinci Xi – the fourth generation of its range- this robotic assisted surgical tool mimics surgeon’s moves, while the physician engages into the console’s virtual world.

Da Vinci Xi instruments have mechanical wrists that twist and turn, emulating human hands, which enables surgeon to perform small and precise movements within the patient’s body.

The Da Vinci Xi surgical system also delivers a highly magnified, 3D high-definition view, special instruments, and software that allows your surgeon a close-up view to perform with precision, dexterity, and control.

Its innovating and accurate technology enables this robotic system with adaptability and versatility for many different specialties.

3D- HD view, and 10x visual field magnifying system. This allows surgeon the best possible vision of operating anatomy.

Safety, precision, and control to deliver optimal setting toward target anatomy.

FireFly System that enables malignant tumors identification and resection with further accuracy.

Minimally invasive, incisions of less than 1 cm and minimal scarring.

Software that eliminates human hand tremor.

Access of robotic arms to any part of patient’s anatomy.

The Da Vinci Xi system has three components

Surgical Console

The Surgeon sits on this fully ergonomic console, wearing a 3D visor and holding controls to master the Da Vinci Xi robotic system arms.  Surgeon’s movements performed with controls, are then reproduced on the patient through four robotic arms.

Patient-Side Cart

Consists of four robotic arms controlled from the console, that can only be maneuvered by the surgeon.  Each arm enters the patient through 8mm – 12 mm incisions.

Vision System

An ancillary screen that shows the image so the O.R team can observe the surgery.

Is the robot autonomous?

No.  The Da Vinci robotic system does not perform autonomous movements; it only reproduces those of the surgeon

How can controls triggering the arms of patient-side cart manage surgeon's involuntary movements?

The system has a set of sensors to completely block clippers at a surgeon’s head movement away from console.  Thus preventing any motion different to surgery.

How good is the robot's view?

The robot delivers 3D viewing through an HD stereo camera, which provides the surgeon a sense of depth and precision.

All of that implies a substantial advantage, as it enables the handling of very small and fine articulated instruments, and rids of surgeon hand tremor, hence resulting in more accurate interventions.

Is it painless?

Compared with traditional surgery, the robotic approach leaves a much smaller incision, which enables a less painful recovery.  It is important to remember that all surgical interventions, regardless of how small they are, imply certain risks and complications.

How Long will recovery take?

Procedures performed with this technique require minimal incisions, which provides an advantage in terms or pain management, hospitalization time, and recovery, when compared with traditional surgery.

Advantages of robotic surgery for the surgeon

It delivers a 3D-HD, 10x visual field magnifying format, certainly superior to laparoscopic technique.

Reduced O.R preparation time for the next intervention.

All these translates into a great benefit, as it delivers careful treatment to patient’s tissues

More than 70 instruments allow the surgeon further precision, range of movement, articulation and rotation (540 degrees’ robot arms rotation, and 180 degrees’ articulation)

Eliminates surgeon hand tremor and avoids involuntary movements

Being so small, robot instruments may reach bodily areas that are farthest and hard to go through.

Interact with other technologies usually of current global use in O.Rs.

Better ergonomics and comfort for the surgeon

Feasibility to perform multi-quadrant surgery, and to even operate several organs located in different anatomical quadrants, without having to move neither patient nor robot.
